Prof. Chantal van der Horst, MD, PhD
Since the beginning of her training as plastic surgeon in 1985, Prof. dr. Van der Horst has always had an interest in the study and treatment of haemangioma and vascular malformations. She also has a special interest in congenital abnormalities in general. From 1989 she has been working at the Amsterdam Medical Centre. In 1990 she helped organise a working group for association of Congenital Vascular Anomalies for the ISSVA (International Society for Study of Vascular Anomalies) in Amsterdam. Since then she has been actively involved internationally in Congenital Vascular Anomalies. Her thesis titled "Considerations on port-wine stains and their Treatment" speaks for itself.
Over the years she has done more collaborative research and published papers on congenital vascular malformations. There is collaboration between specialists in Genetics, Dermatology, plastic Surgeons, Vascular Surgeons, radiologists and also patients. By all joining force we are slowly beginning to understand the effects of congenital vascular defects for patients. Also there is more and more insights into the causes and origins of vascular abnormalities, but these trends are unfortunately progressing slowly.
Since 2000 Prof. dr. Van der Horst is a professor in Plastic Surgery at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. Here she trains young plastic surgeons who of course also get knowledge of congenital vascular anomalies.
