The goal was to find out how often these children develop a\u00a0<b>leg length discrepancy (LLD)<\/b>\u00a0and which factors increase that risk.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Key findings<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2503\" data-end=\"3204\">\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Out of\u00a0<b>1008 children<\/b>,\u00a0<b>14.8%<\/b>\u00a0developed a\u00a0<b>significant leg length difference of 2 cm or more<\/b>.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Children with\u00a0<b>diffuse capillary malformation (DCM)<\/b>\u00a0had the highest risk:\u00a0<b>44.5%<\/b>\u00a0developed major LLD.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">By age 15, the overall risk of developing major LLD is\u00a0<b>31.4%<\/b>, rising to\u00a0<b>66.4%<\/b>\u00a0in children with DCM.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Important risk factors include:<\/div>\n<ul data-start=\"2868\" data-end=\"3204\">\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">A\u00a0<b>large malformation<\/b> covering many parts of the leg.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">A malformation involving the\u00a0<b>entire length of the leg.<\/b><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">A malformation located\u00a0<b>high on the leg<\/b> (hip\/thigh).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Involvement of\u00a0<b>both inner and outer<\/b> sides of the leg.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><b>Overgrowth of the foot<\/b> on the affected side.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">A history of\u00a0<b>hip dysplasia.<\/b><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><br \/>\nWhy does this matter?<\/b><\/p>\n<div>A major leg length difference can lead to\u00a0<b>pain, gait problems, spinal curvature,<\/b>\u00a0and early\u00a0<b>joint wear<\/b>.<\/div>\n<div>A common treatment is\u00a0<b>epiphysiodesis<\/b>, a minor surgery that slows growth in the longer leg.
