{"id":76856,"date":"2026-06-15T11:01:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T09:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/?p=76856"},"modified":"2026-06-15T11:01:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T09:01:34","slug":"issva-2026-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/en\/blog\/2026\/06\/15\/issva-2026-philadelphia\/","title":{"rendered":"ISSVA 2026 &#8211; Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"410\">The ISSVA (<strong data-start=\"11\" data-end=\"72\">International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies<\/strong>) once again organized its international congress from <strong data-start=\"127\" data-end=\"146\">May 19\u201322, 2026<\/strong>, in <strong data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"198\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Philadelphia<\/span><\/span> (USA)<\/strong>. Approximately <strong data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"253\">700 participants attended in person<\/strong>, and, as in previous years, there was also an option to participate online. ISSVA is the leading global organization in the field of vascular malformations.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"470\">The congress featured approximately <strong data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"469\">100 presentations<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"472\" data-end=\"825\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Photography and video recording during the sessions were not permitted, which means we are unable to create our own summaries and reports of the presentations. We have therefore asked several speakers to prepare summaries of their sessions for us. However, this process will take some time, and it may be a while before these summaries become available.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Dinner with Relay<\/h2>\r\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76836 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-relay-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-relay-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-relay.jpg 507w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\r\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"219\">On Monday evening, a dinner was organized for patient organizations by the pharmaceutical company <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Relay Therapeutics<\/span><\/span>. We had already met representatives of the company last year at another conference.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"221\" data-end=\"580\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Relay Therapeutics has developed a new medication for <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"320\">PROS (PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum)<\/strong> and is currently conducting clinical trials in several countries. This new treatment is being developed as an additional therapeutic option alongside existing medications such as <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Sirolimus<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Alpelisib<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>The role of patientorganisations in ISSVA<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"259\">Patient organizations are now also being given a formal role within ISSVA through the establishment of the <strong data-start=\"107\" data-end=\"136\">Patient Support Committee<\/strong>. This committee serves as a collaborative bridge between the vascular anomaly patient community and medical professionals.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"593\">Its mission is to strengthen patient representation, engagement, and advocacy within ISSVA by identifying unmet needs, supporting educational initiatives, and providing advice on research and clinical priorities. The committee aims to ensure that the patient perspective is incorporated into ISSVA\u2019s activities and future direction.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"763\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Members of the committee do not represent specific patient organizations or individual groups; rather, they represent the vascular anomaly patient community as a whole.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Stand<\/h2>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76830 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-booth-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-booth-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ISSVA-2026-booth.png 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\r\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"340\">ISSVA is increasingly providing patient organizations with opportunities to contribute and participate. One example of this was the opportunity for patient organizations to host exhibition booths in the area where conference breaks and lunch sessions were held, allowing for direct interaction with healthcare professionals and researchers.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"342\" data-end=\"520\">Our informational materials were once again taken quickly by physicians and other attendees. As in previous years, a full package of mini Dutch stroopwafels disappeared each day.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"1100\">Our booth attracted considerable attention thanks to our new colorful standing banner, our informational materials, our traditional Dutch clog slippers, and, of course, the stroopwafels. The number of people who recognize\u2014or remember\u2014our organization appears to have a direct correlation with the stroopwafels. In addition to the stroopwafels, several 250-gram packages of Limburg chocolate were distributed to selected individuals. Unfortunately, this has to be done selectively because of the total weight limitations for transporting the banner, documentation, and chocolate.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1287\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The number of booths hosted by other patient organizations was higher than in previous years. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">HEVAS<\/span><\/span> was once again represented at the conference as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2><strong data-start=\"81\" data-end=\"97\">Passing away<\/strong> \u00a0Dr. John Butler Mulliken<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"75\">On January 20, 2026, Dr. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">John Mulliken<\/span><\/span> passed away.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"77\" data-end=\"423\">Dr. Mulliken was truly one of the founding figures of our field. His vision, intellectual clarity, and unwavering dedication helped shape vascular anomalies into the specialty it is today and also laid the foundation for ISSVA itself. Generations of physicians and researchers \u2014 many of us personally included \u2014 continue to build upon his legacy.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"538\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">His wife and daughter were present, and a moving tribute was held, featuring images and a deeply touching speech.<\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.issva.org\/newsletter\/passing-of-dr-john-mulliken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/a>\r\n<h2>First results Relay &#8216;clinical trial&#8217;<\/h2>\r\n<span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Relay Therapeutics<\/span><\/span> presented the first results of its clinical trial, which appear promising. They organized a dedicated session for patient organizations to share these early findings and provide updates on the ongoing study.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmtc.nl\/en\/pedia\/treatment\/medication\/rly-2608\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/a>\r\n<h3>Visible and invisible<\/h3>\r\nISSVA is primarily a scientific organization. This is a building with a huge collection of small food stalls.
