Prof. Dr. Chantal van der Horst, one of our medical advisors (plastic surgery), retired on 28 June 2019.
As part of her farewell, a special symposium was organised at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre.
Many other professors and medical specialists gave presentations and showed their appreciation for Chantal, for example, Prof. Dr. Hennekam, Prof. Dr. van Zuijlen and Dr. Lapid.
For example, remarkable photos were shown, and operations described, on the reconstruction of hands.
Hemangiomas and vascular malformations were also discussed.
We found it shocking that it was forbidden in one particular country to publicly report the negative effects of laser treatments (in a study) because of the negative effect on the incomes of medical specialists.
After the symposium, Chantal gave her farewell speech in the university’s Aula, describing, among other things, how the situation of female physicians had progressed in a world dominated by men.
Her farewell reception was in the Amsterdam Museum.
In fact, Chantal will not actually retire. For example, she will continue to perform operations and support children in Africa and India as a ‘volunteer’ (as she did before).
