Looking Back on an Unforgettable Family Weekend in De Biesbosch – Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 May 2026
We had been looking forward to the annual CMTC-OVM family weekend, and it was a great success! Under bright sunny skies, young and old, Dutch- and German-speaking participants gathered in and around the beautiful Nationaal Park De Biesbosch this weekend. It became a weekend filled with connection, activities, laughter, and wonderful memories.
Saturday, 23 May: Boating, Great Food and Beaver Spotting
The weekend kicked off on Saturday at the Stayokay hostel in De Biesbosch. Over a warm cup of coffee or tea, everyone received a warm welcome and had plenty of time for the first enjoyable catch-up conversations.
Taking to the Water
After the welcome reception, the group walked to the De Merwelanden recreation area. Here, all the ingredients were ready for a delicious self-made picnic lunch. With well-filled lunch bags in hand, everyone boarded their chosen vessel: from active paddleboarders and canoeists to those who preferred to relax in an electric whisper boat. The weather was absolutely beautiful, allowing us to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of the waterways for an incredible 2.5 to 3 hours.
A Golden Evening
After our adventures on the water, we returned to Stayokay for a well-deserved and delicious Mexican buffet. But the day was far from over! In the evening, we travelled to Drimmelen to board a whisper boat for a guided nature cruise. Together with our guide, we set off on a beaver safari during a breathtaking sunset.
Although the beavers managed to stay well hidden—we eventually spotted just one—we were treated to the impressive sight of a White-tailed Eagle, also known locally as the “Flying Door.” Along the way, our guide shared fascinating stories about the rich history of the area.
We ended this wonderful first day together back at Stayokay, enjoying a snack platter, good drinks, and great company before everyone headed off to bed, tired but very satisfied after a memorable day.
Sunday, 24 May: Competition, Survival Challenges and the Coveted Trophy
Sunday promised to be just as sunny and warm. We gathered in Hank at Team Biesbosch for a day full of action and adventure. The atmosphere was immediately set during the welcome reception, where coffee and tea were accompanied by a delicious Biesboschflap—a local pastry similar to an apple turnover, but with a cherry filling.
Women vs. Men on Escape Island
The participants were divided into four mixed teams consisting of both German- and Dutch-speaking members. The first two groups, which included most of the children, started with the survival course. Although the course was designed for all ages, it quickly became clear that the adults were being thoroughly outperformed by the younger participants!
Meanwhile, the other two groups competed against each other on Escape Island. The Dutch- and German-speaking women joined forces against the Dutch- and German-speaking men. Their mission? Escape the island and sound the horn before the (fictional) tide came in. What followed was a fierce and highly competitive battle. In the end, the women emerged victorious and happily reminded the men of their success throughout the rest of the day—with plenty of smiles and good humour. After lunch, the groups switched activities, leading to a second round of friendly but enthusiastic competition.
The Flintstone Parade and the Winners
Following a well-deserved and extensive lunch buffet at De Kurenpolder, it was time for the creative grand finale: each team had to build its own “Flintstone car.” After plenty of brainstorming, teamwork and construction, the vehicles were ready for their parade along the beach. The result was both impressive and hilarious!
A Refreshing Finale
As the perfect ending to this warm and active weekend, the long-awaited refreshing dip in the waters of De Biesbosch could finally take place. With sun-kissed cheeks, tired but happy faces, and big smiles, everyone said goodbye to each other.
We look back on a fantastic and inspiring family weekend in which new friendships were made, bonds were strengthened, and lifelong memories were created. A huge thank you to all the families who attended for their enthusiasm and sporting spirit! See you next year!
With special thanks to Alexandra Haan and Naomi van der Sar for the fantastic organisation!
Reactions
We travelled 2,800 km, and every single second and every single kilometre was absolutely worth it.
Thank you so much for making it possible for our children to connect with each other and to stand strong together despite their rare condition.
It was a wonderful weekend with great opportunities to exchange experiences with other parents and members of the community. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed many beautiful, carefree moments together.
