Prof. Dr. Barend Mees, acting head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at MUMC+ (Maastricht, the Netherlands), is an expert in vascular surgery with many years of experience in treating complex vascular diseases.
Prof. Dr. Mees studied medicine at the LUMC in Leiden and completed his training as a general and vascular surgeon at Erasmus MC. He then spent nearly three years in Melbourne, Australia, to further specialize in endovascular surgery. In 2011, he obtained his PhD in vascular biology at Erasmus MC, INSERM Paris, and the Max Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim.
Since May 2014, he has been a staff member of the vascular surgery department at MUMC+, where he serves as acting head and research coordinator. On January 1, 2024, he was appointed Professor of “Vascular Repair and Regeneration.”
His expertise includes both the surgical treatment of vascular conditions and the use of innovative techniques and technologies to optimize patient care.
With his involvement in scientific research and his contribution to training future vascular surgeons, Prof. Dr. Mees plays a key role in advancing the field of vascular surgery.
